September 8, 2008 - Use of scanning to assess a client.
I learned the technique of scanning in a Therapuetic Touch class. Although it wasn't taught in the Reiki level 1 and 2 classes I took it is an appropriate and useful tool for Reiki. Scanning is a process whereby you assess your clients energy field for areas of dis-ease. You are feeling for places that feel unlike the rest of the energy field. You begin at the top of the person's head and with your hands a few inches above their body in their energy field you slowly move your hands down their body. You are feeling for differences. You may come to a spot that is cooler, or warmer than the surrounding area. It may feel bumpy or like pins and needles in your hands. You may suddenly come across an area that feels empty. These are areas of dis-ease. This is where you will concentrate on sending the Reiki healing energy. Because reiki is Divinely guided you don't have to know what is wrong or out of balance with the person (they may not know either) you just need to let the energy flow through you focusing on them. When you feel complete with the sending of healing energy, re-scan the person to see if there is anywhere else you are moved to continue healing. You can do this on both their front and back. When you feel complete you can slowly and smoothly move your hands down from the top of their head to beyond their feet, smoothing their energy field.
In the Master class I took from Lee McGroty, who was taught through The International Center for Reiki Training, I learned that they teach and use scanning. William Lee Rand (founder of The International Center for Reiki Training), in his research into the true history of reiki, learned that Dr. Usui, the founder of Reiki, used this scanning technique and called it Byosen scanning. If you haven't been using scanning in your sessions, give it a try. See how you connect more with your client and with the reiki energy and intuition.
